RE: How Often Do You Feed Your Dog?

I won't dispute Dr Doug, but every free-fed corgi I've ever seen has been overweight. We feed twice a day, 5:00 both times around. Diva and Buddy get a 1/2 cup of kibble plus a tablespoon of cottage cheese (or chicken and veggies when I've got it made up for them) in the morning, Pippin gets 1/3 cup of kibble plus the cottage cheese. In the PM, same amount of kibble with a supplement powder. Each gets about a stick's worth of string cheese during training in the mid-afternoon. On days they don't train they get a bit more cottage cheese. When Buddy is on his way home from a herding lesson I tend to stop in Castaic and get him a plain beef patty from McD's.. he hasn't complained yet.

Nice photos. I especially like the one of Eve sitting looking at the camera. Such intensity!

Don't make me call your Mom!!

Just got home from a job-related conference in Sacramento. Had to spend last night up there, away from DH and the dogs, not something I'm fond of. I called home last night to check in, and the dogs started in barking. I told DH to hold the phone away from his ears and said in my outdoor command voice "LIE DOWN!!!!!" We finished our 10 minute phone conversation with complete silence in the background. As we were getting ready to hang up, DH tells me he's going to hold out the phone again so I can release the dogs....they were still frozen, lying sphinx-like on the floor!

RE: NEED HELP...Madison is destroying our backyard!!!

We did not crate train her. Don't think she could handle being crated all day anyway. But you expect her to behave like an adult, left unsupervised in your yard, all day long? 10-month-olds tear up stuff when left unsupervised. You either crate train, or you put up with stuff being torn up. We have yet to get her any formal training but have been working with her daily at home. She will sit, stay, come, etc. We've taught her to "high 5, lay, and roll over. I've done the Alpha training where she is not allowed to walk ahead of me, go out the door first, etc. While training is good, none of this has anything to do with the problem at hand. She knows that it's wrong because the ears and head go down when I go out there and see the mess. No, she is reacting to your anger and/or frustration. Please crate-train her before it's too late. 10 months is late, but not impossible. It is not cruel. She can "hold it" during a work day, if you fear she cannot, enlist a dog-walker for a mid-day potty. Dogs need and crave their own "den". It is a safe, secure place for them, that also keeps them out of trouble. Our 14 month old corgi girl is crated whenever we are gone. When we get home and let her out, she eventually gets around to going outside or getting a drink, but her first agenda is PLAY! It is often 20-30 minutes before she chooses to go out (we have a dog door) and potty. Our older dogs are no longer crated, but they are middle-aged and have proven themselves to us. They do have crates, they eat all their meals in them, and we leave the doors open. More often than not we come home to find at least one of them snoozing in the open crate.

RE: Nell broke off a tooth

Well, at least that's the good kind of sticker shock! I know I am very grateful for my vet, I've taken my dogs to him for nearly 30 years now and I don't know what I'll do when he retires!! We got the estimate for the tooth extraction and we're stunned. $40.00

RE: Our Visit to the Santa Clara Dog Show, W/ Doggie Pics!

When you are looking at 20 dogs all meeting all of the requirements of their breed standards, all beautiful and sound and everything the dog should be, you have to split hairs, so to speak. Sort of like judging figure skating.... the young lady who finished in "last" place certainly isn't a bad skater, she's superlative in every way. But when looking at a field that is THAT good, yes, it comes down to aesthetics. "Champion" is the designation given by various registries (AKC, United Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club, etc) to dogs who have consistently won at shows and demonstrated that they are the best of the best. They don't just meet the standard, they stand above the crowd of dogs that meet the standard. For a full description of how a dog earns a championship, there is a Beginner's Guide to Dog Shows Here The road to a Championship is in the seciton titled "How A Dog Show Works" This also contains some handy tips for first-time spectators.

RE: Our Visit to the Santa Clara Dog Show, W/ Doggie Pics!

Pops - in the case of the poodle, their hair has to be cut at somepoint as it just grows and grows and grows - much like our hair. So they decided on a cut that was historical based on their hunting background, although somewhat exagerated! I agree that the show cut is a bit much, but if you've ever seen some proud poodles prancing their stuff at a show it almost seems to suit them. I keep mine in a more simple cut, but still leave some puffs on the bottom of their legs. They get lots of compliments on how beautiful they are (although Spike would prefer Handsome!). There is something to be said for the wash and go ridgeback though! Laura Well said. Same goes for the long-haired spaniels...the hair keeps on growing and growing, and gets split ends, matts, and breaks. You have to cut it at some point. A breed standard is the description of the ideal dog for that breed. Dogs are judge how well they meet their breed's standard, and yes, there is some subjectivity there, but judges cannot ignore or re-write the standards. They have to undergo testing on the knowledge of those standards and many apprentice judging assignments and evaluations by AKC field staff before they get a judging license.

RE: Our Visit to the Santa Clara Dog Show, W/ Doggie Pics!

The grooming is not a fashion, it is set by the breed's standard, and has not changed in a very, very long time. There are two permissible cuts for poodles to be shown in, both of which have historical roots in their days as cold water retrievers. There is one acceptable look for cockers, as for most of the long-coated spaniels. Beautiful dogs, but I always wonder, who decides what silly haircut is in style for the year? Between poodles and cockers, you just never know what they are going to look like!! LOL

RE: Two Unilaterally Deaf Pups in Bette's Litter

Good names! I love Tally. There's a retriever, a Toller, if I remember right, around here that does Obedience named Tally. In Utility Obedience, one of the elements of the directed jumping is the Go-Out. The dog is sent away from the handler (in a straight line) and told to sit when he's about 40-45 feet away. In obedience there are no "set" commands, no over-arching tradition says you say a certain word for a given exercise. The Toller's owner sends the dog with "Tally....HO!!!!" for the go-outs. Always a real crowd pleaser.

RE: Our Visit to the Santa Clara Dog Show, W/ Doggie Pics!

I didn't go to Santa Clara, but knew several people who did. I can only go that far from home when I am on vacation or have a 3-day weekend. :) The Bakersfield RV park is quite nice, I like the cafe. Brings back memories (the property used to be the old drive-in) Hi Samantha, I was wondering if you were there? I even asked a young lady if she knew anyone that was a member of RV.net. She looked at me like I was nuts and I felt silly! I wish we knew that you lived in Bakersfield. We have had to travel there to have our motorhome fixed. Over and over again! We stay at the Bakersfield RV Resort. We love it there. An absolutely great place, especially for the price. Glad you liked the pictures. I should have taken more of the Pembrook Welsh Corgis. Cute little guys and gals. :W Dawn

RE: Our Visit to the Santa Clara Dog Show, W/ Doggie Pics!

Glad you had fun, and thanks for the corgi photos! She wasn't in the pictures you took, but Diva's mom was there, as well as a first cousin. Cousin Luna won a 3-point major on Sunday! Dixie (Diva's mother) didn't get any points but I hear she presented her self very well.

RE: Two Unilaterally Deaf Pups in Bette's Litter

That's how we knew when old Beth (Rainbow Bridge class of 2009) had lost her hearing, 4th of July came and went and she never noticed a thing. Mark, that's one of the joys of breeding working or performance dogs, is you have a ready excuse to see your grand-pups from time to time. Our young little Diva will get to see her "Grandma Christine" at the annual Corgi-only herding trials this April, first time since we got her. She's bringing Diva's Uncle Bee down to do Intermediate Ducks and Advanced Sheep. And one other dog at the Started level, I think. And Buddy's breeder doesn't do any performance events but every once in a while we do obedience at an all-breed show and she's there to watch. Always beaming "that's my Boy!" when he comes out of the ring. And for Buddy, getting to see Grandma Deb is a better reward than a treat!

RE: Two Unilaterally Deaf Pups in Bette's Litter

We also look for pup that we are drawn to because we are more likely to work throuh problems with a dog if we like the dog. Mark If only more people realized this one. If you don't like the dog to begin with, you are not going to put in the time with it, be it to teach them not to pull on their leash, to sit stay, or to perfect that outrun, etc.

RE: Two Unilaterally Deaf Pups in Bette's Litter

So sorry, Mark. It's heartbreaking to put heart and soul (and wallet) into a breeding and then see this. But, better to know now, like you said. I'm sure you'll have no problems placing them, there are always plenty of folks happy to take a high-drive BC for a sport home. If you were on my coast, I'm sure I could have ten prospects calling you in a day!

RE: SIL won Best of Breed (Sussex Spaniel) at Westminster!

Three cheers for the owner/handlers out there! Congrats again. I watched Monday night but lost interest after everyone I knew personally was out of the running. Harvey, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi who won Breed, is owned by a friend. The Pembroke is also a California girl. Buddy's brother Dandy has gone Best Opposite against this her something like 5 times in a row now. When I looked online and saw that Sadie the Scottie had won the terrier group I figured it was a done deal, historically the terriers have dominated WKC, and this dog is winning everything in sight right now. Rockhill, sorry you didn't get to go this year. Any chance we might see you at Eukanuba this year?

RE: My little guy being neutered tomorrow!

Well by now the procedure has come and gone, and Cody is probably nearly back to normal. Anxiety is understandable, especially considering the OP's background. I lost my mother during the summer of 2008, then a dog before the year was out, so I know. Neutering is a very simple and not very invasive procedure (unlike spaying), and I'm sure he's fine. Just don't let him lick his incisions!

RE: Best dog door for stick frame house?

Another vote for the PetSafe doors. I've always been wary of the ones with the collar transmitter, don't want to risk the battery dying and locking Fido in. If you really think raccoons coming through is an issue it might be a risk worth taking, though. Between the magnetic catch on the flap and the double-flap model, you'll get the best draft control possible. Just be sure the installer measures twice, cuts once!

RE: Fences/Containment systems

Expens are the way to go. You do need to have a very good idea of how high your dog can jump, and then get one size taller than that! For the poster whose dog pushed the panels into an acute angle, if you use a top, it has to stay square. You can also use snap hooks or caribiners to keep the corners square. Or, you can do as we have done and taught the dogs that their feet are NOT to touch the expen. It goes part and parcel with crate training, that they cannot scratch, claw, or otherwise molest their crate or expen. You have to be very persistent in correcting this behavior for it to go away. As for wireless systems, they are dangerous. Often times even after dogs are trained with them, they simply decide that the cat, squirrel, etc on the other side of the boundary is worth a little zap,and off they go. But, when the chase is over, it's not worth the pain to come back into the yard, so they take off.
