RE: need help with trip planning NJ to FL..

FYI Campgrounds are closed late at night. Many campgrounds have lots of trees. Most Campgrounds have poor lighting at individual sites. Campers already there would prefer not to hear you trying to back your trailer into a dimly lit site...... with trees all around it, at midnight. If you stay in a campground....... most RVERS prefer to travel and set up in the daylight. New RVERS getting off the road at midnight would be best served by staying at a WALMART, FLYING J or REST AREA instead of trying to find a campground and setting up in the dark.

RE: Ford Back Up Alarm Stuck On

This is the OP responding. I did the following before I wrote this. 1. Cleaned the sensors twice. 2. This started after I went thru a car wash, so I waited a week for the sensors to dry out. 3. My hitch is not installed on the vehicle. 4. Thank goodness my off switch does work........... but what a pain to have to use it every time I use reverse.

Ford Back Up Alarm Stuck On

I have a 2005 Ford Excursion with a factory back up warning system. This system warns the driver while in reverse gear as to how close he is to objects located behind him. When I place my gear selector in reverse the warning buzzer now goes on with a constant tone.... even with nothing behind the vehicle. Is there something that a home handyman can look at or does this have to go in for a diagnotic service in a Ford service center?

RE: Gas Related Problem (propane tank)

In the deep south butane is sold instead of propane. It will freeze at around 32*F. This may be the cause of your problem. It happened to me and others that I have met.

RE: Progesso

There are at least two Progreso's and probably more. The "other" one is the port for Merida, which is in the Yucatan near Cancun.

RE: How many have experienced snow in Mexico?

I experienced snow in Creel a few years back. Creel is a small town near the top of the Copper Canyon. The next day I went down into the Canyon to Batopilas where it was warm.

RE: 90 Day Rain/Temerature Outlook - Jan, Feb, Mar

I will attempt to assist Skip with the "distinction" of what I posted. First, scroll down to the large map in each link. There are two links and two large maps. One shows that the entire southern portion of the US will be wetter than average. The other map shows that the area from Florida to Eastern New Mexico will be cooler than average. Here is the "distinction". If you head south the temperatures will be below average in Texas, the Gulf Coast and Florida......... while Arizona and California will have normal temperatures. However, every place in the south is predicted to be wetter than normal. Here is my conclusion. If you are headed south for the winter, it looks like Southern California and Arizona will have weather closer to their averages than the other snowbird spots. Therefore, if you are undecided as to where to go, this might be a good year to try the desert southwest.

90 Day Rain/Temerature Outlook - Jan, Feb, Mar

The recent rash of poor weather in the snowbird regions has prompted me to look at the long term prognostications by Intellicast. It looks like the only area of the very southern US to have average weather this winter will be CA and AZ. Therefore, if you are headed south and have not decided where to go these maps should help you make up your mind. http://www.intellicast.com/National/Precipitation/Departure90.aspx http://www.intellicast.com/National/Temperature/Departure90.aspx

RE: GPS plugged in all the time ????

I have a Garmin 255W that I used to leave in my Corvette..... plugged in, but turned off. I only use the Vette in good weather. As you know, if you leave this model plugged in (but off) it will keep track of the satellites so it will be ready to use when you start your car. If you do not do this you must wait for the GPS to acquire the satellites. The plug in my Vette is hot at all times. After a particularly long stretch (3 to 4 weeks) of not using the Vette, the weather cleared and I went to use it. The battery was dead. I charged the battery and never kept the GPS plugged in after that. Problem solved. I am not the only one that I have run across that had this problem.

RE: overnight motel along I-77 in NC

http://www.travelcoupons.com/mdv/mdvpage24.htm Wytheville VA, I-77 Exit 41 Super 8 Motel. Next to a truck stop that has RV parking and it has RV parking behind it next to a Sleep Inn. Both motels and a restaurant share a large vehicle parking lot. The coupn for Super 8 lists a $45 price. Another coupon book for the Sleep Inn lists $45. The Sleep Inn is a nicer place. Get coupons on line or at VA welcome center.

RE: travel in Texas on Other Multilane Highways

Many of the towns have roads that circle them on one or both sides. They are designated as "LOOP" and then a number. If you take the loop road you leave 77 or 79 and travel the loop and rejoin the main road on the other side of town.

RE: Salt Damage to Vehicles in South Texas?

I have been coming to the RGV for five years. I find that most of the crime that affects Winter Texans is petty theft. At home I never lock my car. In the RGV I always do. One year I stayed near Corpus Christi in an RV Park right on the beach. You could almost watch the rust develop on your vehicles. Salty dew, and salt air permeated every nook and cranny. By moving just a few miles inland you stopped all of that. Most Winter Texan RV Parks start at San Benito and go west. Yes, there are parks east of SB but not that many.

RE: travel in Texas on Other Multilane Highways

I use that route every year to get from I-20 to my winter home in the RGV. It is the best route from NE Texas to the RGV. Very little traffic, wide lanes, well maintained and enough small towns along the way to provide the services you need.

RE: Traveling with furnace running

I found that: You can travel with the furnace on. I have done that and with piezo electric ignition there is no pilot light that will go out. Unless it is on for a long time your bed will be ice cold when you get in it. What works best for us is a 120 volt electric blanket. Turn it on max for an hour or two before bed and it will be toasty warm.

RE: Topic Regarding Mexico Frontier Zone US Vehicle Insurance

I have been to the Nuevo Progreso web site before. It is interesting that you are the person who maintains it. I was actally going to see if they had a "contact us" section so that I mught ask this question. I guess the question has now been asked and answered. Thank you.

RE: Topic Regarding Mexico Frontier Zone US Vehicle Insurance

drtee, Thank you for granting me "temporary citizenship" in the great state of Texas. This will be my 5th year coming to the RGV as a Winter Texan. I must say that I do enjoy the visit. As a retired University Registrar, I just happen to have visited UT-Pan American. My take on your suggestion is to purchase Mexican insurance even for a three hour visit to Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. Do you happen to know how much that might cost from a reputable insurance agent?

RE: State Farm Insurance Now Covers Part Of Mexico

Thanks for the answers so far. Whether (as Moisheh states) State Farm has made a mistake and does not mean what they say is really not the question. State Farm has clearly stated what they intend to do. That is provide the coverage that they state. How well they will be able to provide that coverage in a foreign country is the real question. Based on answers from Moisheh, Turtle-Toad, and Fishinghat it looks like their coverage would fall short of a Mexican insurance company. Many snowbirds spend the winter in RV parks right on the Mexican border. I do. I have also RV'd deep into Mexico. For my RV trips into the interior of the country I will always get Mexican insurance. My question really is for a day trip to a Mexican town like Progreso, which is right on the border and actually has a web site that invites Americans and Canadians to drive across the border. The web site intimates that you will be OK in their town without Mexican insurance, but it could be a hassle if you have an accident. http://www.shop-progreso.com/ http://www.shop-progreso.com/miscellaneous/locator.html So it looks like the answer might be a choice between paying for better coverage with a Mexican company or using State Farm and expecting a problem if you have an accident. I would like to hear from any other folks who may have actually had to use coverage like this from an American insurance company.
