RE: Big screen tv mounted to the ceiling?

Sorry, we have a 1999 Starcraft Stardust. We don't have an AC unit right now, so I figured weight-wise we'd be OK. But if we install an AC in the future, is that going to break it? I have no idea how much AC's normally weigh although they seem like they'll weight a whole lot more than 25lbs. Thanks mike4947, I'll have to check the weight of the TV but it seems like that will be a viable option. I was thinking I might take apart the air vent to see what's inside of the roof, that'll give me access to install whatever "rigging" I eventually go with and I won't have to drill through the top and risk creating any leaks in the roof. Then again there might be all kinds of bracing in there that gets in my way. Hmmm, decisions decisions! :) ~Jess~

Big screen tv mounted to the ceiling?

We've got a 26 inch widescreen tv and I'd really love to mount it on the ceiling but I don't know how much weight the campers supports can hold without collapsing. :) We'd take it off during travel, but since we full time, we setup for 4-6 months and stay setup. I'd be nice to have that extra counter space :) We don't have an AC, but would like to get one in the future so will that plus the TV collapse it? Has anyone else made this type of mod before? How would I go about actually mounting it?

RE: greasing wheel bearings

Don't just go by mileage. I just had my bearing fall out while driving on the highway. Me and our trailer slowly, but loudly SCREAMED to three different places to find a bearing but because it wasn't an "automotive grade" part we had to do some shopping around. The last shop called about 20 places to track it down and just when all hope was lost he remembered his friend at the radiator shop (of all places) also does trailer work on the side (as a hobby?) and he might just have a bearing that would work..... $160 later (and both sides replaced) I was told if the trailer sits for 6 months or more, the bearings need to be repacked. "The steel attracts moisture (even though it's 'sealed' up) and as soon as you hit the road, the moisture pushes out along with all the grease." I had recently just bought the trailer and it didn't didn't occur to me that the trailer might have been sitting there for two years or more! (duh) We did some damage to the axle and sooner or later we'll need a new one, but for now it's holding. :( So, don't just go by mileage!

RE: tenting material

If it's raining and you have to pack up, just make sure you open it back up once you get home. It'll be OK for a day or two but open it up as soon as possible otherwise you'll have to wash all the covers off the beds and seats! The walls are thick and I agree with Hiker3, MUCH stronger than you can imagine! I've got a 97 starcraft stardust and it's great, no complaints! Are you near a dealership? Best thing to do is get in one and kick the tires so to speak :)

RE: Downsizing Question

I had a 35ft fifth wheel too and I feel your pain (er, felt your pain, now I have a PUP instead)! :) 1) Other than popups, do any other trailers "fold down" .... Yes, check out HiLos. They have hardsides and the top part "slides" down over the bottom part. Check the review though, I have no idea the quality of the HiLo brand. 2) Do all lightweight trailers have brakes? No and not all of them require brakes. For example my PUP doesn't have any - it depends on their weight. Some states require brakes on any trailer over a certain weight. I agree with cochalet - if you want a light trailer and have some money to spend look at the fiberglass RVs. www.fiberglassrv.com That's my goal some day! Note that some of the fiberglass RVs can be heavy even though they're made of fiberglass! My fav is The Egg Camper - http://www.eggcamper.com/ If you don't have money to spend and since you're only using it 10-15 days a year, why not just buy a nice PUP? The ACs work just dandy and the heaters will melt your face off if you want them to. But honestly, 10-15 days a year? Hmm, maybe renting it would be better? That's WAAAAY cheaper than buying one, insuring it, and storing it :)

RE: What is your limit for a pop-up

I had a 35ft fifth wheel and now I'm in a PUP full-time. I loved the extra space in my 5ver, but it was a pain in the butt whenever we moved it (we both have experience with heavy equipment so it wasn't "hard" just a pain). Our transmission went out in our 1ton Ford and it was so expensive to fix we decided to downgrade. Did we really need all that******anyway? Apparently not! I think the PUP gets you back to that "camping feeling". I was really sad when I spent the first night in my 5ver and realized it wasn't camping at all! If you can spend the extra money get a hybrid, BUT if you aren't sure this is really what you want, get a PUP (much cheaper) and try it out! Oh, and don't worry about being cold - that heater gets ridiculously hot! Towards the end of our stay in The Black Hills of SD it got down in the 30s for a week and we didn't even notice! Nice and cozy :) EDIT: I can't say c r a p? really? lol

RE: How well would workamping work for a teacher?

You can workcamp in a popup! I do it full-time! :D We've come across MANY internet based teachers - the only problem was when lightning would take out the internet or the internet didn't even work at the resort and they'd be stuck without a way to communicate with their students. Invest in an internet card from your phone company as a backup (I use altel with a cradlepoint to split it to multiple computers and gaming systems). And if you can't find an RVer job, are you anywhere near a spacecamp? :D I had the opportunity to work at KSC for one summer shooting videos and all the people there were teachers on summer break. It was a really great way to change things up for a summer or two - plus it was great money!

RE: Wind Issues in my popup

Thanks for giving me that piece of mind guys :) I don't know what the wind gusts were like in Gardiner, MT a couple nights ago, but it felt like the biggest gusts I've ever been in!

Wind Issues in my popup

I've got a 99 Starcraft Stardust and recently we were in some pretty heavy winds. As the wind made our canvas walls flap and pull in every direction, I got to thinking, "I wish I knew what kinds of winds this thing could handle". I searched a number of different keywords on google and rv.net and really couldn't find anything. Perhaps a pdf manual is available?

RE: Winter work in Florida?

It's funny, we're in the SAME boat. Both of us raised in FL but can't find a workcamper gig to save our lives! Hopefully we won't be stuck in the Everglades (45 minutes to the nearest "civilization"). I called ST pete KOA and they told me "there was absolutely no way I'd get hired at Florida KOA because we never worked at a KOA before and it takes at least two seasons to train us". We're both WAAAAY over qualified, it just seemed like the phone op had a stick up her butt. It's funny to hear that someone else had a problem with them too. A lot of people are telling us that it takes that long or LONGER (two years) to train someone correctly! ha! :o
