RE: Christmas Bonus?

My DH is a pastor of a mid sized church. We usually get one weeks pay as a bonus at Christmas. This year, due to decline in offerings, we won't get it. We understand, but feel for the other staff who will also miss the bonus. I clean houses part time, and so far almost all of my customers have given me a bonus.

RE: obituaries

Everyday online. Even though it would be nice to get a phone call, people dealing with grief just can't be expected to remember everybody to call. Last year when my brother died, I forgot all about a dear out of town friend, until she contacted me a week after the funeral.

The Elf on the Shelf

Am I the only one who has not heard of this cute Christmas idea? Our 7year old GS told us that an elf magically appeared in his class room at school last week to "watch over" them. The teacher told him that it was a special elf who reported to Santa. The little red elf mysteriously moves to a new place in the room each day, and the children are supposed to find him. Since he is a magic elf, the child is not supposed to ever touch him. Our DD bought the book and little elf for our GS this weekend, and he is so excited. He totally believes the story, and we are having a blast playing along. I figure that this probably the last year he will "believe" in Santa, and we love the excitement and expectations he has. What fun!

Where do you hide Santa stuff???

Our kids are all grown up but have 2 grandsons, ages 7 & 2 1/2. Right now, our TT has: one outdoor play log cabin, a gaming chair, and about a dozen other Santa gifts for our boys. DD just comes by and gets the key to the trailer to stash her stuff. Looks like we will be busy elves on Christmas Eve!

Christmas at the Nursing Home

My mother has been in a nursing home since March of this year. Of course, it was a very difficult decision for us to make, but one which was unavoidable. We are very fortunate that this home has caring staff and goes to great lengths to care for and provide for the residents. During this Christmas season, there are many volunteers singing, dancing, crafts, the fun stuff you don't expect in a nursing home. I visited mother yesterday and a young lady came into her room and read us a list of Christmas jokes (which were pretty funny). Each wing is having a decorating contest, and they are pulling out all the stops. I'm blessed that my mother is able to get around with a walker and is still pretty much in her right mind. The staff in her home, not just on her wing, seem to all know mother by name. Mother says she is happy there, and has only asked to come home once. I realize but understand that nobody wants a loved one in the nursing home, but if my mother has to be in one, I am so happy it is this one. I've learned that many, many people have no one who comes to visit them, and I make a point to smile at and speak to as many as I can. Do I think everything is perfect? Of course not. But I am satisfied with the choice. Ideally, my mother would be spending her last years at home, but we don't live in an ideal world. Share the Christmas Season where you can.
Merry Christmas!

RE: Biggest ...anything...you ever ate ?

A one pound "Ranger Burger" at Four Winds near Ft. Benning Georgia. Of course this burger is an honor to the Ranger Brigade at Benning, though I could not manage to eat but half of the burger. That's what DH is good for...the help eat!

Another Low-Carb Breakfast Recipe

We tried a new panccake recipe using pork skins on our last camping trip. Give it a try, before totally discounting it!
Plain,unflavored porkskins
2 eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream
3 pks Splenda (or your choice)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
dash nutmeg
Crush 1/2 bag (medium size) porkskins until it resembles bread crumbs. Stir in other ingredients. Cook in lightly oiled pan as you would a regular pancake.
We used Log Cabin Sugar Free Syrup, and to me these tasted more like a "French Toast" than a pancake, because they are denser.

RE: Trip planning

We always plan a camping trip for the Fall and for Spring. Typically, if I know it is a popular place, I'll go ahead and book 6 month ahead. Otherwise, I may wait until closer to the date. However, we have never pulled out of our driveway for a camping trip without making a reservation ahead of time. We are 20 minutes from our local state park, FDR, in Pine Mountain, GA. I even make reservations ahead of time there.

Big Lagoon State Park, Florida

DH and I want to take our 2 grandsons camping during spring break next year. We are looking at campgrounds near Pensacola, and wonder if anyone has stayed in this one. We want to visit family in the area, and also go to the airforce museum. We would like tips on more places to explore and visit with our 8 and 3 year old grandsons. Thanks!

RE: Going grocery shopping today!

We're heading out next Monday for 6 days camping in N.Georgia mountains. I finally got the menus set and the grocery list written down. Grocery shopping day for me is on Saturday. We are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary, and have made this trip our "tradition" each October.

"IceBreakers" Sours: Improved packaging

While in the check out line at the grocery store this morning, I picked up a container of IceBreaker candies. The container is round and has a small opening labeled : "to share" on one side, and on the other side a larger opening labeled: "not to share". I suppose this is to keep down on spreading germs if you do decide to share this candy with a friend. The problem I see is that my fingers will be all over my side of the candy, which could end up being shared with my friends on their side.:h

When did I become my Mother??

Is it just me, or when we get "older",do we begin to have some of the traits of our parents that we were so quick to criticize when we were younger? I have to admit, that at the young age of 57 I have come to the realization that I may be turning into my Mother! Here are some reasons:
Frequent "pit" stops while traveling
Getting dressed and ready for an appointment 2 hours ahead of time
Getting up a couple of times during the night to go to the bathroom
Worrying!!
Being weepy FREQUENTLY, which includes tearing up over a commercial or song on TV
Who would have thought it!! Certainly not me.

RE: Flooding in Atlanta area

We are 200 miles south of Atlanta, and the only problem we have is from the runoff down the Chattahoochee River from there. Our river walk is under water, but they have been opening the gates, so I think it's well under control now. We are taking a group up to Stone Mtn tomorrow, and according to them (Wednesday by phone) only the back area, and lake area are flooded. We are going for the laser light show, so no problem for our plans. I feel really sad for the loss of life and homes up in Atlanta. Will take a lot of work and help from all around our state to get them back on track.
