the Oscars

After I saw the previous posts about the Oscars, I thought I would see if anyone watches them for the reason I do.
I always watch the Academy Awards--mostly out of habit, I think! I remember the first one I saw, at about 14 or so. We had a black and white TV and the reception was snowy, but I had seen "On the Waterfront" and fallen in love with Marlon Brando. So I watched the Oscars to see if he would win. And he did! I have seen every one since then! I guess because when I was growing up, I loved movies and movie stars and used to write them for pictures (I have 2 scrapbooks filled with those pictures). Through the years, the shows have gotten more political and are not as much fun, but I continue to watch, to the complete annoyance of my husband!
I thought the one last night was a little better than usual, but when they were doing the memorials for those who passed away in 2009, I can't believe they left out Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur.

RE: Hershey and Snickers: Throughput

The pictures are just delightful! Hershey and Snickers certainly do seem to have the same mannerisms and facial expressions. It must be hard to deal with Hershey's illness, but how wonderful that they are together and Snickers is learning from Hershey--from all you have told us, he could not have a better teacher. Good dog, Hershey.

RE: Land Between the Lakes

We stayed at Hillman Ferry a few years ago. We loved it. You can google Hillman Ferry reservations and their website shows a place to check about reservations. It's a large campground and some of the sites are by the lake.
Also, there are other parks, but this is the only one I can personally vouch for! I'm sure the other posters will have more suggestions.
There's a lot to do and see in the area, and we really enjoyed the stay. Hope you do, too!

RE: Natchez, Miss

I don't know about the rv parks, but there are 3 places I like in Natchez. First, what's called Natchez-Under-the-Hill, just because it's an old historic area and there are places to eat and relax next to the river. Second, the old Eola Hotel downtown--we went to the dining room there one afternoon and had dessert and coffee. And third, if you like tamales, go by Fat Mama's on South Canal Street--a small place, but really good tamales!
As you can tell, I like to eat--but there are a lot of other things to do in Natchez. So hope you have fun!

RE: My Rainbow is gone

So sorry about your little Rainbow. As others have noted, even the smallest of God's creatures bring joy to our lives. We had a pet chicken Henrietta who would venture in through an open door, and come sit in our laps! We grieved when she was killed by a hawk, and we buried her in the back yard. Her playing companion, our little dog Prissy, still runs to the grave, stands over it, and barks whenever she sees a hawk!
I know you are sad, and I think it helps to tell others and let us share your loss.

RE: Snowflake has gone to the Bridge

Like a real snowflake, each dog is unique and beautiful
Beautifully said. What a wonderful dog Snowflake must have been and what joy she obviously brought to all of you. In return she was a loving companion. I'm so sorry for your loss.

a little Organization help, please

I have trouble organizing the cabinets in our RV. Some of them in the kitchen are narrow and deep and things seem to get lost back there! Others are high and some of the upper space gets wasted. And then the ones over the couch where we keep maps, books, CD's, etc are large enough, but the "stuff" just doesn't stay in its place.
I don't have any trouble with the bedroom/bath area or even the kitchen drawers and under the sink, but those cabinets are bothering me. We're going on a long trip in May and I want to get them better organized before we go.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

RE: Newbie question, do you plan meals or wing it?

We don't really plan each meal. But we do start out with the following:
1. a pre-cooked roast and pre-cooked chicken we can use for a meal w/vegs or for sandwiches
2. ground beef patties for burgers/cooked crumbled ground beef, frozen in bags to use for spaghetti, tacos, sloppy joes
3. pre-cooked soups/stews
4. frozen and canned vegetables and soups
5. frozen waffles/frozen biscuits
6. packages rice, noodles, potato flakes
7. bacon, sausage patties, eggs, juice
8. cereals, oatmeal
9. Salad fixings & fruit (not too many, as we buy along the way)
10.nachos, chips, and a few sweets
11.condiments, margarine, cooking oil, bread, crackers, etc
This gives us a variety to choose from and works well for us.
We use a slow cooker, George Foreman grill, microwave egg cookers, and a coffee maker.

RE: How are pets/dogs effected by altitude?

This is a great question and I appreciated reading all the posts. We, too, have a Western trip planned this year. We have a small terrier, so this really made me aware.
Thank you for asking.

RE: Motorhome Basecamp in Smokeys 3 days early April?

The most recent estimation of the opening of I40 past the rockslide is the end of April. This info was just released yesterday. Inclement weather has postponed completion of the job.
If you stayed in Gatlinburg you could come through the GSMNP to Cherokee, NC, then take Hwy 19/23 on through Waynesville to I40 then to Asheville. This is a 4-lane road once you get through Cherokee.
Enjoy your trip.
Mountain Lover is in Waynesville, which is not far from Brevard, NC. That's Transylvania County where you can see some really beautiful waterfalls. He gave me a little info about the area before we visited a couple years ago. We stayed in Maggie Valley, and there are some other waterfalls between there and Cherokee--plus a really nice one right around Cherokee.

RE: Electric Egg Cookers?

We have a West Bend egg cooker. I have used egg cookers since I discovered them! We use it a lot for boiling eggs, but the poached eggs turn out just fine.

RE: Cabbage Casserole

Thanks for sharing this recipe--it sounds really good.
We love cabbage and my husband usually just steams it, but what I really like are cabbage rolls. They're a little time consuming, so I found a recipe for a cabbage roll casserole. Much easier, and tastes the same!
I will have to try your recipe.

RE: Little Bighorn Battlefield

"Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" was the first book my husband gave me after we were married in 1963. I still have it.
Hope this is okay to say, but my compliments to Grey Mountain and McZippee for the gentlemanly way they handled the posts!
