RE: B owner with spring fever

All,
Regardless of the calendar, the alignment of the sun and earth, the temperature, whether the tax return has been sent in, the snakes driven from the Emerald Isle or any other indicator, I have learned that, in this part of Virginia, 'till the first jonquil blooms...it ain't really Spring ! Until then, there is always the danger of ice on the water bucket in the morning.
In the mean time, I read my catalogs, make "to do" lists, look out the window and wait for the yellow chickadees, and watch the gas prices rise. Aah, to be rid of long john's!

RE: Falcon 190 conversion - question about sleeping area

Bob,
Our '89 Falcon, with the fuel-injected 351 engine, had constant starter problems. At first, I tried several versions of heat shield for the starter; they did not work. It seems that the starter's location caused a high degree of "heat soak" which rendered them temporarily useless. I finally replaced the starter with a more expensive "Mean Lean Green Machine" geared starter. Nary a problem since then!
If you can afford one, try one!!

RE: Roadtrek Solar Awning

Lynne,
Do some research about "thin film solar cell technology." It is on the way and promises to be much cheaper. It will also conform to compound-curved surfaces.
I'm just waiting!

RE: Quick propane question - Intervec Falcon

Jerry,
Our Falcon is older than yours but I would bet that your water heater and your furnace are entirely separate. My furnace is back on the right rear side of the van beneath the wardrobe and there is a manual gas shutoff valve that needs a 90 degree turn to open or shut. The heater is then turned on by moving the small lever at the bottom of your thermostat to the right and adjusting the thermostat above the ambient temperature.
Like Handbasket, I can't figure out why the WH and the furnace should be interconnected. You might try filling the WH and turning on the furnace to see if the WH also heats up water. It is not that much trouble to drain it again. Please keep us posted.

RE: Searching help in B300 Tradesman historical Informations

Jochen,
It looks as if your ad was torn out of a magazine such as Popular Science or Popular Mechanics or Mechanics Illustrated.
If there is a date somewhere on the page or even the name of the magazine, I will go to the local library and make you a color copy of the ad...if I can locate it in the back issues. Do you need it for a Fahrzeugbrief?
By the way, (I can't read your license plate clearly) in what state/town do you live?

RE: Maybe size matters

Our Falcon has a raised roof which gives my 6'4" body room enough to put on my trousers while standing..in the living room/ kitchen. There is also enough room in the bathroom for most business but I should sell tickets for folks to watch while I try to wash my southernmost parts while in the bath tub... it must look exceedingly comical!
My other big problem is size 14 feet...I have one heckuva time getting them around the doghouse if I try to go aft without getting out of the van and walking around to the side doors to get back in. I also have to take off my shoes if I want to do any sit-down business in the bathroom. There is not enough room for my feet between the throne and the riser which covers the crossover pipe at the threshold of the bathroom door.
My relatively tiny wife has no problems. I DO recommend wearing a hard hat while entering or exiting the rig; my hair is thin enough without the extra scars I've accumulated over the last few years!

RE: '95 Ford Falcon 190 "loft" front windows cracked

Alex,
My '89 Falcon has the same windows and they, too, are slightly cracked. I could not find a source for new windows.
There is/was a member here, I think his "handle" was Frederick, whose son had made molds of the windows and was willing to vacuform a pair from Lexan. I never asked the price because my pocketbook had a hole in the bottom at the time.
Frederick, are you still here??

RE: propane tank valve

VERY IMPORTANT!!!
All of the advice about turning off the tank valve makes good sense but this thread brought to mind one important thing that I have usually forgotten:
I have installed a re-igniter on my totally-manual-ignition water heater. It is powered by a nine-volt battery and will provide a spark to re-ignite the pilot flame if it should go out. It is totally independent of the electrical system and would continue to spark even if the 12 volt power to the coach is shut off!
Note to self (and anyone else with one of these re-igniters): BEFORE you refuel, shut off the LPG tank AS WELL AS the sparking re-igniter!
Most newer Class B's have automatic water heaters and reefers which would be shut off if the main coach power switch is turned off. Old orphan dinosaurs like mine don't have such goodies, so my warning might not apply to you. Just a thought...

RE: Savanna regency conversion van

Nice fan, landyacht,
I wonder if it could be used to replace the noisy fan in our range hood. I wouldn't mind reworking the wiring and controls.

RE: My Reflectix Window Project

Great work, Rodger, I have begun the same project and will steal yours and Lynne's ideas!
I prefer, however, to use the inside-the-vehicle windshield cover for one, perhaps silly, reason: In the event that we would have to quickly depart a campsite without exiting the van, I wouldn't have to go outside to remove the large windshield cover like the one Rodger shows on his rig. Swivel the driver's seat, yank down the inside windshield cover and "get the heck outta' Dodge!" Even my water and electric connections have a "breakaway" possibility.
Call me 'Nuts' but I usually prefer to err on the side of safety.

Ford 351 cooking over...wrong radiator??

My 89 Intervec Falcon with a Ford 351 cid fuel-injected, fairly new Jasper engine constantly overheats, even without AC running. The replacement radiator is a 3 row/tube type but I suspect that it is not sufficient to dissipate the heat from the heavy rig. There are heavy-duty oil and transmission coolers and heavy-duty fan built on. Ford dealer does not have specs for this early model nor can they tell me if ambulances, etc, have a heavier-duty (4-tube row) radiator.
I cannot find a correct 4 tube row radiator from any of the usual parts sources. Does anyone know where I can locate a new 4 tube row, heavier-duty radiator for this engine OR does anyone have an RV with this engine who is willing to check their radiator to see if it has the 4 tube row radiator?
I am at my wit's end and am trying to get the rig ready for a long-distance trip. Can anyone help??

RE: FALCON - water heater, etc

All,
I finally sent Shazdoll a zipped copy of the Owner's Manual and a reply to her water heater question. She is going to have to dig up the individual appliance product manuals off the internet.
I applaud the fact that she prefaced her post with the word FALCON...Jack, we may have started something here!
There should be enough of us Falcon'ers here to get her up and running. Now we have to convince her to come to B-6! I hope there is still room but I imagine some of us would be glad to share a site.
