RE: Water Pressure Regulator

The only problems I have had of not enough pressure has been at some camps which seem to have a regulator mounted on the tap already. Then I don't get any pressure at all. I add a Y fitting just after the regulator. When we disconnect I turn on the other leg to release pressure without getting soaked.

RE: Disney World Park attendance

The best independent Disney World site is All Ears. They'll have the stats there. The various guidebooks also have guides.

RE: De-Winterizing Water System

We wait until we can expect above freezing temps at night, then we just hook up the water and run the pink stuff out. This year we still had some freezing temps on the rest of the trip but with waste tank heaters and a furnace outlet near the freshwater tank we survived. On the trip back we monitored weather. I winterized in southern Kentucky in the evening and we used disposable plates for the next 2 days. We flushed the toilet with pink stuff when we had to. Spent one very cold night near Detroit. Last year I trusted to the tank heaters and couldn't dump in Detroit -- had to get it inside at our dealer's for a day to thaw out.

RE: Looking for DVD player with coax fittings (UPDATE)

We ended up buying the extra box; it all seems to work OK.

RE: Making reservations

We went out to California in December and came back in February. We reserved at our destination, but even then we couldn't get a site for New Year's Eve. (We ended up in a parking lot in Pasadena in order to see the Rose Parade). We didn't reserve on the trip out until about noon. I did use the mapping program and campground guides to pick out places we could get to in reasonable time. On the return trip we reserved ahead for New Orleans and barely got in. One other CG we booked the last spot -- the site closest to the highway. We had another reservation where we asked for 3 nights but only stayed 2 -- in one of the canyons, nothing within walking distance and a warning about mountain lions because of the fires.

RE: Pets - To and From Canada

We did not have any food problems going to the US in December. But we have tried to have it all made in USA. We used to have problems (during the beef scare) with food that was no longer in its original package. When we say we are going to Florida with bananas, we have to promise to eat them before we get there. US customs has never asked about the cats. Canada customs has once (possibly twice) asked for the cats' vaccination certificates. Canada does not seem bothered about food (alcohol and tobacco, different story). You are not required to have a passport to enter Canada, but they check anyways so that you can get back to the States. US Customs + Agriculture regulations change without notice. They do not seem to want to post current restrictions on their web site. (On our past trip, we were checked inside the US: entering California and just eastbound out of El Paso.)

RE: Crossing at Detroit 2010 South Bound(Ambassador Bridge)

Coming back, they have messed up the exits. The actual I75 exit is before where it used to be. (used to be 47B; now is 46 or 45) Your GPS will give you wrong information; they have a sign telling you to ignore it but it is posted on the road after you leave. Then you drive around in circles twice and the toll booth has gasoline prices on it.

RE: Thinking about a Disney trip.

We have camped at Fort Wilderness 5 times now. Last year we managed to get 2 weeks. (This year we went to Disneyland instead.) The site that answers all questions about Disney World: All Ears We usually plan on 5 days to get down as we drive at a leisurely pace and like to get set for the night early. Once you are in FW, you can settle down and not need your own transport again, unless you have some need for groceries that DW can't supply. Disney buses (and boats and monorails) will take you everywhere -- only Animal Kingdom is an excessively long haul in the morning. We managed 2 weeks without leaving the World. There are a couple of useful books: Along I95 (I think) and Along Florida's Expressways.

RE: New Orleans for First-Timers

We were just there over Mardi Gras. Stayed at the KOA near the airport. They have a shuttle service to the French Quarter at 9 every morning and back at 6. We were usually at the pickup point well ahead of their time. The cab fare back is $30 if you miss the shuttle. Bus tour -- the Katrina tour is informative and does a lot of the rest of the city. Also plantation tour. Street car: the St Charles line is a national monument and goes through the Garden district. (Warning: they shut down 2 hours before parades start and don't start for at least 2 hours after.) You can buy a day pass. We didn't worry about safety much in the daytime.

RE: 30 Amp Extension Cord

On our trip home last month there was one campground where the rig's cord just barely made it to the power post. I don't remember if I've used the second cord with this rig, but I know I used the extension on the previous rigs. Same with the extra water hose. On our first night camping ever, the hose had to be run under the rig and over to get to the tap. The only hookup I don't have an extension for is cable TV.

RE: California gas pumps

Thanks for the discussion. We probably will never get back to California, though.

California gas pumps

We've just finished a month ad a half in California and I want to ask about the gas pumps there. I filled up a number of times and I only once managed to do a satisfactory job. I kept finding that the nozzle would shut off if I tried to run it at more than a crawl. One time (or twice) I found that pushing on the nozzle to keep the airseal tight let me run at full speed. The last time the station attendant came out and twisted the nozzle handle around to the northeast position and it ran. That was after my first tries ended up spilling gas immediately. So does anyone have any good experiences? This will probably be our only trip to California. I didn't have any problem with rental cars.

RE: Heated drainage system?

Our motor home has a pipe from the heating system that goes into the compartment where the freshwater tank and pump are. The drain for the tank sits outside though. The hot pads for the wastewater tank are manual -- on/off switches in bedroom. they heat the tanks but not the external pipes and the valves. Last year we decided to winterize on day too late on our trip home. I couldn't operate any of the drains, even the freshwater, and ended up running the pads and the heater until I could get the unit to my dealer for a night indoors. Fortunately this only meant one overnight.

RE: stupid mistake.....thank you ADCO

I make little tags and put then on those little plastic clamps/clips. I have them for all the umbilical cords, the back door, the propane tank and the furnace, fridge and water heater. When I hook up I take the tags and clip them to the driver's visor; when we break camp I take them around and make sure everything is unhooked or turned off. Does running the furnace with no propane damage anything in the furnace electrics like the igniter?

RE: 2010 Four Winds Freedom Elite 31R

We have a 2007 Four Winds and I agree about the manuals. What Four Winds wrote is just a little less generic than the Woodalls manual. I downloaded the manual for the radio because it was not any of the ones described in the chassis (GMC) manual. There is a switch above the mirror controls that I haven't figured out yet -- might be mirror heaters? Call your dealer or Four Winds if anything breaks down in the warranty period before you have someone repair it unless it becomes a real emergency.

RE: navigation/gps

We have our Garmin on the beanbag in the middle of the dash -- the windshield is too far off for convenient use. The only time we lost the signal was along I40 in New Mexico/Arizona when it went completely wonky before admitting it was lost. It picked up the signal again a few hours later, but in the meantime it wouldn't read even pushed to the window.

RE: Water damage....what to look for

We just had a flood in our house and the insurance contractor came around with a dampness detector. If your RV shop doesn't have one, you could ask your insurance company (house or RV) for the name of a contractor with one. They might even be rentable!

RE: Worst case scenario...a cautionary tale

We just had a flood in a bathroom in our house (supply line broke) which soaked the floor and the ceiling of the garage below it. Our insurance paid for a major ripout and replace job. The concern is mould (or mold). The adjuster and our agent told us that there are 200 kinds of mould and only one is toxic, but because of that one they pay to replace flooring, drywall and insulation. Keep in mind as you work on your problems.

RE: Source For Checklists For Securing/Hitching/Unhitching/etc.?

I would add to Jerry&Cynthia's list "check site after pulling out". We've left behind the occasional item that was stored under the RV. For regular use, I have a lot of spring clips with key tag labels that say things like "Water" "Sewer", "Hydro", "Back Steps". When I hook up these go on the sun visor or the gear shift; at strike time they are taken off and fastened to the item as it is disconnected and stowed. (we have a class C) We also have check lists for starting a trip and for winterizing (our park model).

RE: Overnight inh Sarnia, Ontario

We always stop at a campground in Monroe, just south of Detroit, which is open year round. (No water in sub-freezing temps, though). This is less than a full day's trip for us, but allows for border delays. The next day we stop in Kentucky.
