RE: Acadia National Park in September?

OK, you have generated enough "camping envy" in those of us who have been before. I have one more thing to say: Popovers at Jordan Hall.

RE: Campsite Size in SP, FS, and NPs of New England

Acadia is the only NP. Well worth the visit. Tons of activitesa and good transportation. YOu will have to check on Blackwoods CG for size. It has some really big space but you will be w/o hookups. Mt. Desert Island CG (private) is very nice (no pets). In the White Mountains National Forest try for the CG along the Kankamangus Highway coming in from Conway. Covered Bridge CG will have too low a clearance for you but others will probably work. You probably would prefer not to have your rig on the full length of that road. Again, no hookups. Definately book space for the summer months. After Labor day the place is yours - except during the weekends.

RE: Upstate NY, VT, NH, Me - State Parks - recommendations?

You will be close but September is a little early. First week in October is prime for northern New England color but things do start changing by September. For most of us, this is the best time of the year.

RE: Upstate NY, VT, NH, Me - State Parks - recommendations?

For electic in Acadia you have to go private. That goes for all the campgrounds I know of in Vt and NH too. If you can make with on-board power you will have a phenominal number of outstanding places to camp. I hope you are planning on traveling north of the Great Lakes. Canadian parks are very nice. The national forests in VT and NH are excellent. Try along the Kankamangus Highway in NH- one of the worlds best rides. Covered Bridge Campground will get you close enought to Conway if you need some civilization. Acadia is a busy place in summer but it should not be missed. Reserve now. If you value quiet look at Cobscook Bay State Park - downeast ME. One of the quietest places on earth.

RE: Summer vacation in Maine and upstate NY

There are places to get your lobster all over out there. You might be getting the molts at that time of year (soft shell) but don't pay the extra for the hard shell as they taste about the same. For a little different set of restaurants and shopping head to Southwest Harbor. It's worth the drive around SOmes's Sound. Others have already tagged a lot of stuff to do for you - all good. Make a phone reservation for "tea" at Jordan Hall. We like the outdoor seating on a good weather day so that we can look out over Jordan Pond and the Bubbles (hills). This is not just a "chick" thing. The popovers and jam are FANTASTIC. If it is really hot and you are hiking take the trail up Champlain Mountain with a bathing suit and jump into the little beaver pond up there. Great fun.

RE: Westen US National Parks

We are covering a similar swath of parks this summer and will take 86 days. Looks like you have relatives in WA you are trying to include which makes it tougher to condense. Add me to the list of those recommending cutting the stops and driving and spending the time absorbing some of thes FANTASTIC places. My top 2 picks on your list: Glacier, Tetons Short list to drop: Mesa Verde, Olympia (only because of rain)

RE: RV Camping n Yosemite

When I went looking for July 13 today I found a few single days at Tuolumne Meadows but when I clicked "Book It" it forwarded me to the Recreation.gov site - where I had to sign on again. Methinks the websites are in the process of change.

RE: RV Camping n Yosemite

This process is very poor - and infinately frustrating. The cluster "push" on that one moment on the 15th of the month overburdens the system and produces the result described in preceding posts. The rolling reservation i.e. 6 months out on a day by day basis seems less daunting but that is subject to abuses also. Unscrupulous campers book early for more time than they want only to cancel some of those dates later leaving them with their spot. Too bad the NPS hasn't been given the resources necessary to provide for the demand. The Valley surely has to be limited but surrounding areas could provide the necessary space for us.

RE: Reserve America - Nickerson State Park

Those sites really go quickly. Area 5 is the best. Area 6 & 6a are crowded and they really stack them in. Go on line several days in advance and keep a check on the available sites. You relly have to be quick to get Cape Cod. It is a great park with LOTS to do.

RE: Yellowstone CG Decision

We were disappointed in Madison CG. Yellowstone in general is being loved to death. Just about any CG in the park is going to be a carnival. Very disappointing. To top it off, Madison River is closed to canoes and yayaks and was closed to fishing when we were there. NOt exactly the outdoor experience we had hoped for.

Booking Yosemite

I went on the Recreation.gov site to test out the booking process for Yosemite. Even putting in a date within the booking window I got "not available" FOR EVERYTHING. And that is not even in the Valley, but out at Tuolemne Meadows. That is 5 months ahead. The sites were to come available on Jan 15 for camping dates up to June 15. Do you think they could be sold out that fast? Or am I dong something wrong?

RE: Reserve America - Have you had good or bad experiences?

We have camped over 800 days in over 200 campgrounds. We generally like to book ahead and we prefer state and national parks and forests so we have booked a lot through Reserve America and Recreation.gov. We have never had one problem or dropped reservation. Some campgrounds post a picture of the campsite on the reservation "Details" which we really appreciate. It helps us with size, privacy and orientation concerns (placememt of the add-a -room). The only problem is that very popular CG get booked especially on the weekends so you really have to get on at the exact moment the site opens. Then there are the folks that scam the system by booking ahead of when they really want the site and then cancelling the unwanted days for the "change" fee. Kind of unfair and no one seems to know what to do about it. I like the system overall.

RE: Do you charge your battery at home, or only on the road?

All this talk is making me long for my old set-up. I had a dual battery in the TV (GMC Sierra) separated with an isolator. It charged both TV batteries and the camper battery while I traveled. I connected to the camper when parked which topped off the camper battery. The isolator prevented the secondary TV battery from draining the main TV battery so I could always start. We went 73 days of dry camping (moving every 4-7 days) without draining. My present system uses two 27 batteries that are re-charged only through driving. It is hard to keep them topped off with just 2-3 hours of driving. So we adjusted with a little more frugal use of power and it works. Just not as well as the old system.

PUPs at Grand Tetons

Has anyone traveled in their PUP to the Grand Tetons. A website says that there are no trailers at Jenny Lake. I thought I remembered seeing Pop-ups there when I was there last (but did not stay). Otherwise COlter Bay has got to be my only choise I guess. No reservations - a little nervous about that.

Lassen Volcanic NP

I could use a little help picking out a campground at Lassen. We will be there in August. It is just the DW and me. We are in a pop-up and tend to appreciate the quieter, few big rigs, more natural, and put up with the fewer services to get it. First - are we going to want ot make reservations or go FCFS? Second - which CG? I noticed that Summit Lakes and Manzanita Lake are getting some road work done: DURING THE 2010 SUMMER SEASON ROAD CONSTRUCTION WILL TAKE PLACE ON 11 MILES OF THE MAIN PARK ROAD FROM MANZANITA LAKE SOUTH TO DERSCH MEADOWS, EXPECT TRAFFIC DELAYS. What can you tell me?

RE: PA to yellowstone questions

YOu will need reservations at all your primary stops. CGs really fill early in the day at these places and you definately want that peace of mind. Same goes for RMNP especially if you want a CG near Estes. www.recreation.gov is your reservation site. Don't expect free cancellation and there is a reservation charge (about $9 I think). It is your only option. As you travel through the Badlands from ND to MT there are few really nice stopovers (IMHO) but two that you might seek out along the way are secret. So keep this to yourself. Theodore Roosevelt National Park: an oasis of Eden amongst the Devil's deserts. Makoshika State Park, MT (not far from Cody, WY) A magic place of canyons that put on color at dawn and dusk and dinosaur bones and caves that breathe cold air.

Desert Canyons in Summer - Crazy?

DW and I are headed to Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, etc in late June - early July. No AC in the Popup. Crazy hot - I know. We've seen the heat in Montana (100+) one year and w/o the humidity it was quite tolerable to us. Are we going to get baked? Also we were thinking of spending 2 or 3 days at each NP along that string. Since we don't really know what to expect I would consider not using reservations so that we could be more flexible. Are the parks really busy een in Summer? Are reservations recommended? Thanks - in advance - for the benefit of your council.

RE: Best historic towns in Boston area

Looks like you have a good list for the Boston area. Boston itself is a real arch. treasure. If you do plan to camp on Cape Cod - a little off the beaten path - then you need to get a reservation at Nickerson State Park in Brewster. Historic architecture can be found anywhere on Mass. but a few of the early buildings from our earliest settlers are still around in Eastham, Chatham and Brewster amoung others. Each town has its own historical society that would love to help you plan. Nickerson itself is a gem. Overloved in the summer but Fall is the best time to be there. Beautiful clear little kettle ponds are the focal points for the campsites. Book early especially if you plan to be there over a weekend. Although it is way out there (physically and socially) Provincetown is a hoot and has its own unique brand of architecture.

RE: Help

You're going to find a lot of brand-faithful PUP owners out there. Seems to me that you must get what you pay for. A nearly new PUP can be a good value. DW and I have over 800 days on our Fleetwood Niagra. I have been most impressed with the canvas on this unit. No hint of a problem. Cost per day including all repairs is under $10/day now. Now you will have to work on imagining going further than 250 miles. There is a lot of great country out there it investigate. Welcome to the forum and have fun with the "hunt".

RE: Replacement Dinette table for a 2002 Coleman Niagra

I went with a homemade top. We found the size and folding mechanism convenient for us and replacement tables were all a little different. We wanted to keep the option to use the folded down unit as a bed for kids. 3/4 in birch plywood with a solid wood edging and 3 coats of Minwax urethane. It looks and works great.
