RE: Usability of Garmin versus other brands

We previously had a TomTom One XL, we now have a Garmin Nuvi 465T. The TomTom had some very inaccurate maps. In an area close to me it had roads that had been taken out over 20 years ago and did not include a neighborhood that was built 15 years ago. Yes, I did upload the newest maps. The Garmin is updated for both. The TomTom also took us down a dead end road once near Gettysburg.
Both interfaces work well, each having its own quirks. You can download POI files for each so that is not an issue. To be honest, we always have the 465T in Truck/RV mode when in the MH. VERY nice. We also use it in car mode when in the car and that works like the normal Garmin. I will not get a TomTom again.

RE: Which GPS

What are you going to be using it for? If you want a unit to use while towing a fifth wheel, consider the 465T. It has features that no other Garmin comes with. You can set your highth, width, weight, etc. and it will try to keep you safe. It includes Blutooth and traffic warnings. It has a car mode and a true truck/RV mode. All of the others just give preference to truck routes when in truck mode.

RE: Not so fixed it seems

There have been rumors that this is caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI). This causes the ECM to go a little wacko and then we get the acceleration problems. We used to have a Dodge minivan that had this problem but it never caused serious problems.
If there is some truth to the EMI, the Navy has a large hangar down here that is all set up to create all type of EMI and they test the aircraft (specifically the electronics) inside of the hangar. They have some very experienced engineers who could help them out. They actually test the aircraft for electromagnetic pulse generated by an atomic bomb.

RE: Tires/belts/hoses

This is my personal opinion, not much scientific facts to back it up.
1. You should be OK with the tires. Check them often and make sure none are coming apart or overheating.
2. Go ahead and change the belts. Not much of an expense but could save you a lot of headaches. Save the old belts as spares.
3. If you are going to flush the radiator, go ahead and change the hoses. Same reason as above.
Have a good trip.

RE: Thinking about a Disney trip.

I think we'd need to stop at a place along the way for a night, but then that extends the trip another 4 days each way.I don't understand the "4 days each way". We drive from MD and it takes 2 days, it should take you one more at most. We figure we can drive 500 miles per day comfortably. Take the RV. You may not save much money but you will have more fun.

There are many around Williamsburg. We usually stay at American Heritage. Go to http://www.rvparkreviews.com, it is a good reference.

RE: Toad Question

Most Saturns can be towed four down. Check http://www.motorhomemagazine.com, they have tables for each year showing what can be towed. There were a few models in the late 2000s that could not be towed but the 2000 model should be OK.

RE: Hearing Aids?

I have Tinnitus, along with hearing loss. Would hearing aids increase the volume of the ringing?I agree with WillyB, Tinnitus is usually helped with hearing aids. I have read that tinnitus is actually your brain making up sounds because you cannot hear them through your ears. The hearing aids give back some of the hearing and the load buzz seems to go away some of the time. I had hearing aids about 8 years ago and that was my experience. But they were the older analog models and annoyed me to no end with background noice. I am hoping that the newer digital aids will be better. I need something to help in business meetings because I cannot hear the speaker or others.

RE: East vs West info for everyone

Driving 75 in the west where you see in a straight line for 20 miles is very different than driving in the east with trees everywhere, deer about to jump out and have a close encounter, and roads that curve because they are based on Indian trails.
Even if I could drive 75 with the MH does not mean I would. I might sneek up to 70 without the toad. 65 or less is mandated by my toad.
Slow down, watch the cactus grow, smile at the RV sitting on the side of the road with a flat tire.

RE: Baltimore to Florida Keys v Baltimore to LA - which one?

I currently live in Maryland, lived in LA area for 27 years, and I have lived in Key West twice. I agree that Key West does not have much to offer yonger children. If they were old enough to go snorkeling it would be a different story. In my humble opinion, Florida only has two things to offer. Beaches and Disney World. The Everglades is a BIG swamp with BIG bugs. Sorry, Florida.
You would never forgive yourself if you did not see the sites in the west (along with many in the East). There is the Grand Canyon, Big Sur, the Rockies, Las Vegas, Los Angeles :R, San Francisco, etc. But in the East you have DC, New England, North Carolina, etc.
It is a hard decision and almost impossible to see everything in 4 weeks. One factor is "do we have that in Europe?". The East is something like Europe but Europe has nothing like the desserts and mountains of the West.

Hearing Aids?

I have the typical 60YO male hearing and need hearing aids. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears, especially in the high frequencies. I had my hearing checked today and the audiologist recommended a pair of hearing aids that will cost $7,000. :E
I don't trust the audiologist. She was nice but she makes her money from selling me expensive aids. Then she recommended a credit company that also would get a piece of the pie. Everybody involved has a vested interest in how much I spend. Does anyone out there have experience with a disinterested third party of any sort that can give fair advice?

RE: Harpers Ferry, WV

When you go to Harpers Ferry think about taking mountain bikes and go on the C&O Canal Tow Path. Here is a link to a map of the C&O NP. It will give you a different view of the area and you can take as short or as long a ride as you wish.
BTW, there is an interesting CG at Fort Frederick State Park in MD. Not too far from Harpers Ferry. Has a Civil War fort on site, C&O Canal, trails, ponds, river, etc. But it is bookdocking only. Nice large sites. Here is a link to the park. There is a paved bike trail just .5 miles from campground if you do not want to use mountain bikes.
Have fun

RE: Two Direct TV receivers side by side remote operation

Have you thought about using RF remotes instead of infrared? You will need to see if your receivers are capable of using RF, some are not. Check with DirecTV. With RF remotes, each remote and receiver are encoded to match.

RE: DIGITAL HD antenna. Would this be RV compatible?

In response to the original post, that antenna may be fine but I would think it needs to be adjusted for proper reception. It is clamped to a pipe in the picture. That could be a real pain to adjust it every time you stop and want to use it. The Winegard adjusts from the inside of the rig, no going out in the rain.

RE: NY LIMITS FIREWOOD TO 50 MILE RADIUS

I don't understand the resistance to this regulation. Have you seen the devistation in Shenandoah National Park from the gypsy moth? That insect was brought in, it is not native. I had two very nice cherry trees in our yard, each over 50 years old. They started to die and I called the state to see what I could do. I noticed a grub under the bark. I was told to cut down the trees and burn them. That way I may have helped neighbors save their trees. It was a peach tree borer. I am sure it was not native to the area, otherwise the trees would not have lasted 50 years.
Help save our trees and forests. Many states have these regulations. It is not to make money or irritate people, they know outside insects and diseases do major damage. Others have given personal testimony on this site. What more proof do you need?

RE: workhorse brakes

Customer recall letters were mailed last May.... from what I have heard, they will inspect your pistons and calipers and will replace if they have the defect. The recall plan and instructions were mailed to dealers in August.
Most failures have occurred in the earlier models that sit for long periods of time. You may be misleading some people. The inspection only applies if you have an issue. If you are not having any problems, WH will not pay for an inspection. I have had two brakes lock up.
There are rumors that the actual fix will not happen until sometime this coming summer. I wonder how the owners of WH would feel about us taking one of their kids or grandchildren along on my next trip with questionable brakes. :(

RE: Backing into campsite (people with experience only)

We have owned all three. I can backup the MH without any assitance, using the mirrors and rear camera. So my list would be C, B, A. The hardest to backup is my 5X8 utility trailer, never goes where I want it.

RE: Do you think that gas is expensive?

I remember when gas got up to $1.73 per gal in CA in 1973. Then I did the math to compare the price of gas versus my personal wages. I make almost 10 times the salary that I did in 1973 (I was in the Navy). So a comparable price of gas would be about $17.00 per gal. That would be expensive.
