RE: Struggling to find a TC, discouraged by the inevitable.

Of course who knows from the web the conditions. Buying remote is somewhat hard, but I have bought 2 vechicles remote without seeing them in person and you could give a checklist to someone here on the forum for you to check out before putting a deposit or something. I was picky and lucky. Wanted only bigfoot or northern lite and found one in a few months. New was not an option. HAGGLE!!!!!!!!! I think all of these below are over priced. These are like MSRP on a new car, you want dealer invoice or better. If they sit for more an a week, they are paying insurance and if they have sit for a month or two, they could sit for a year. This is a camper comparable to mine. You should be able to get this for well under the 12k that I got mine for. Get the condition report make them a low ball offer, keep your eyes on it and if it does not sell keep calling them asking if they want to sell it or not. http://www.uniqueautogear.com/unique_rvs/view_rv_details.php?MID=26500 RVTrader: http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/listing/1999-OTHER-12%27-95737826 http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/listing/1998-Bigfoot-Ind-18%27-Columbia-River-Big-Foot-95871401

RE: Struggling to find a TC, discouraged by the inevitable.

I am very surprised by your story considering I would think that people would be selling them like hot cakes. I bought my 2002 10-2000RD in 2004, camped in a couple of times. It was 12k (about 1/2 price new I think maybe less). At the time it seemed like a great deal since some 2004 I saw were 25-30k ridiculous. I bought it within a day of it being posted, paid cash and from someone that had also paid cash for it. http://denver.craigslist.org/rvs/1431900528.html http://cosprings.craigslist.org/rvs/1432268861.html They are out there, you may just have to compromise and I agree, the third bed may be why you have been looking so long.

RE: Weighing in across the US. Are TC's exempt?

I drove my 97 F350 Crew SRW for a couple years and a NL 10-2000 RD. It worked fine and still does. I now have ride rites on it. i run load range E BFG ATs. Works great, just drive in the limits of the vehicle. I am over GVW, pretty sure.

RE: Rollover

My analysis of the above roll over story - Inexperience. No way could I make it through that with no paragraphs, eyes are just too old, so I will trust your comment! :) I am glad it sounds like people are OK.

RE: Eagle Cap or Northern Lite?

I would buy the NL if you wish not to worry about exterior maintenance other than cleaning and caulking, colder weather camping, build quality and WEIGHT! WEIGHT and build were my reasons.

RE: Truck Campers/Food in Bear Country

No food, anti-perspirant, tooth paste, sun screen or cosmetics in tent. Treat them like food-- a bear will.

RE: Lockers and heavy diesels

Here is some general advice on diffs. I have no experience with large towing trucks but have a ton of experience wheeling/upgrading 4x4 SUVs and believe that this still applies. If you have a stock LSD, then likely this is paired well with your axles and it becomes a finer line whether an upgrade of the diff will result in axles being your weakest link. As a result, upgrade axles if you are upgrading diff. This is especially true for a true locker (selectable spool) like Detroit or ARB. However... keep in mind that if you get on the brakes with an LSD, you can essentially lock the diff and with a lot of traction on one wheel you can pop your axles. The safest bet? When ever you upgrade a diff from open to lsd to locker, etc... Upgrade your axles too. May also wish to consider better ujoints, if you have them (stuff I played with had swivel balls).

RE: Tire opinions ?

BFG A/T and M/T is all I will run on my trucks and BFG Traction TA on my Subaru. Every time I have tried another tire I have been disappointed. Worth every penny.

RE: Coleman Stove/Grilltops-any reviews??

I've been using the green colman two burner for many years now. Works great. In fact I just used it the other day while tent camping with the Family. Best Halibut I've ever cooked if you ask the DW!!! Yes, but it can not grill.

RE: Crappy-Jacks (As they are sometimes called)

I recently found out that if you don't have the lever in the up position with pressure on the jack that it can come down on you. I got out lucky with no damage but was kinda perplexed for a little while. How can that happen?

RE: Is Electric Jack Loading Critical?

I have a 10-2000 and just installed happijacs and fastguns. WOW! It is so much safer and quicker than using a drill that any loading problem is not a concern to me. I just level it and start lifting/dropping and level along the way. I use a couple sticky levels for rough leveling and a longer level for the final fine tuning. Question: what does a "longer lever for the final fine tuning" mean? I have two levels on the left rear and rear of the camper. Are these adequate? The little 1" sticky levels are not very accurate, IMO, I get it close with those and have a cheap 3 ft level I use to get it perfect. Likely not needed though.

RE: Camper Unloaded then Running Around in Truck

Other than the tire is more easily punctured at high pressure and the fact that it feels like you are driving on bricks, I see no problem with it and do that myself most of the time.

RE: A/T rated e tires

I think that those Toyo come in 235/85 R16 as do the BFG Commercial TA Traction which I have heard good things about. My problem with both would be availability if you need a replacement.

RE: A/T rated e tires

If you are set on an AT tire load range e, by far the best are BF Goodrich A/T. I have run them on my rovers and my '97 SRW Ford Crew with Northern Lite. They are the best AT and IMO, the best MT is a BFG MT-- siped. 235/85 R16 is E rated and stock on my '97.

RE: FIRE - From the pics, looks like a truck camper

Something to learn from this situation. People frequently post that they want to suspend their insurance coverage on the RV, except for their comprehensive coverage, while it is just sitting during the winter. The camper would be covered if the comprehensive coverage is still active. But look at the damage to the house. What if that was the neighbor's house? If the liability coverage was suspended to save a little premium the camper owner would be liable for the damage to the neighbor's house, without any insurance. No your home owners insurance and/or your neighbors home owners insurance would cover it.

RE: Turnbuckle madness

I have the derringers and they are great! I used parts from my existing turnbuckles and pieced them together for under $100. I have hydraulic jacks and they will allow me to get the TC off or level very quickly. how quick?

RE: Dually VS SRW....I was in Horror Driving my SRW Truck

I loved the truck and had it first..then bought the camper based on A DEALERS reccomendation......he had me over 1000 past the GVW. I realize now most of you SRW dont give a flip about being overweight...thats the bottom line here. I was not. Most of you are really willing to risk a Single Tire blowout.....I was not.. It was my choice to make the change based on a feeling and saftey issues. I came on here because the dealers all got it wrong.they were willing to overload my truck....just remember that was selfish on their part...they are not out on the road in my truck....I AM! They cant make these campers light enough......near impossible The above are the facts..not wishful thinking on my part.... So you can tell me I am wrong till the moon falls out of the sky.....but the facts are the facts... Two tires= no Saftey net Overweight= no Saftey net Bad accident because you were overweight and on two tires...the State Police will ticket you and call you stupid.....not me I have a family with young kids in the Truck...I am not willing to risk it...and I got plenty of PM's from people who have changed their minds about the truck they are about to buy because of this thread...good for them... So whack away.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noob You are getting emotional. You are not wrong, you are not open to others opinions. There are plenty of campers on this forum that use campers at about 2000 lbs, that is pretty light. Likely some that are less. Hall mark for one. I have a SRW and am likely over weight. I adjust and drive safe. Easy. Done. Argue with yourself all you wish. Just like biking, skiing, and other sports, stay within your ability and you will be fine. If you think that you are safe only because you have DRW you're kidding yourself. A single tire blow out on your front is the same as SRW. Most blowouts are due to improper pressure. Not everyone has the money to change their rig. Not everyone has kids. Regrdless, you made a decision that was good for you. Good on ya. I however am not going to run out an buy a DRW jsut because of this thread. Sorry.
