RE: Poor Aerodynamics of TCs - rant

Avion travel trailers looked like an airstream trailer but the aluminum was a satin finish anodized look. Avion used to make truck campers in the 1960's with the rear rounded like the trailers.

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

In your defense the supplier normally asks which grade you want.
Your top probably won't receive the heavy use of a typical kitchen so you should be fine.

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

I just finished up our kitchen remodel abt. a year ago and didn't notice a difference in the laminate.
Did you use vertical or standard (for countertops) grade ?
Unless we're starting to see imported laminate here ???

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

Great job on the top !
As far as trim around the vent you could make one out of maple or poplar hardwood.
3/4 or 1" stock, trace the shape of hood along edge then 1/2-3/4 back from edge, cut and shape outside profile then very carefully cut inside edge.
Thinking about it,it might be more of a pain than it's worth.
The flexible base will probably look great once fastened and painted.

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

69cayo, thanks for the tip. As soon as I read it I had one of those "Of course, why didn't I think of that" moments. Due to a 30 year old radial arm saw that still makes really accurate 90 degree cuts the faceframe is straight but your suggestion would have made the construction faster and easier. BTW, how is work on the TC coming along?
The windows were very time consuming, but their reglazed, new seals and reinstalled.
I built the bed platform during the cold snap we had and it took forever for the epoxy to settup. With the design of the camper I had to build the platform in sections then assemble in place.
I'm nearly at the point of starting the rough wiring, a huge milestone for me.

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

dieseleagle, Great work as always.
Just a thought, if you would have shortened the partitions 3/4 you could have made a homerun to the cabinet ends with the top front and top back stringers.
That would have eliminated quite a few kreg joints along with being quicker and easier to keep the face frame straight.
Just my .02.
John H, Cabinet grade plywood is not what it use to be.
I retired from a cabinet shop abt. 3 yrs. back and 2-3 yrs. previous to that we started receiving and turning back imported (China) plywood that was absolutely horrendous.
The surface's where not flat, full of voids and like you said very thin face veneer.
Make a long story short they did improve but not to the quality of what we saw from U.S. and Canadian manufacturers.
They stopped stamping the country of origin on the edges so it's anybodys guess what your buying now.

Very nice ! Do you know what primer he used ?
On another subject did you use "A" or "AD" rivets ?
I was led to beleive AD(hard)was the proper rivet but now I see Vintage Trailer Supply is selling soft(1100)buck rivets which would be A ???

RE: Airstream - The Whole Enchilada

Way cool, 69cayo. The skin looks pristine, at least from this perspective. You are doing it right. First comes making it watertight. After that its just a series of doable mini-projects.
Thankyou...As you well know the more you do the more you see that needs doing.
The skin is anodized which is a blessing in one respect and not in another. Being 40 yrs. old the anodizing is pretty much worn out so there's no hope to bring it back to a newer condition.
Whats left of it also prevents any chance of polishing the surface so I've yet to decide what I'll end up doing there.
I've knocked out quite a few dents and patched/repaired sloppy (that's putting it nicely) work by POs.
This was a good size hole that was covered over with duct tape and roofing tar.......
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/rr249/denlou4525/100_0737.jpg
The windows are time consuming with reglazing (plexiglass), cleaning frames, new seals and then cleaning the opening of a multitude of caulks and silicone.
I'll start a thread down in truck campers at some point with a bit more detail.
In the meantime I'm awaiting your next installment. What a fantastic job your doing.

I'm working on 1969 Avion truck camper (riveted aluminum) and can relate to alot of what you have gone through.
Excellent work, you should be very proud.

I think you'll have to post the make and model and some pics.
They are all different so you will have to be more specific.
