RE: Problems Volunteering for NPS

Another highly efficient government program. Guess where the folks who are forward looking, hard working and more than willing to do a superior job will end up? And you know it won't be in our NP's.
Ouch!! It really hurts when you get to shoot yourself in the foot---again and again.

RE: Forest River

other than thinking albany is "upstate" in NY, Fire Instructor hit it on the head, back side of hot water heater, three valves in a H pattern of lines, color coded, hot and cold, drain water heater, blow it out, bypass, pink stuff in, when all pinked up I simply return the by pass to normal flow and don't have to do anything in spring but flush out the lines and tanks.
wht model FR is it?

RE: Selling Stuff

did auction once and took a bath on it, anything didnt sell i was stuck with and the commission on what sold made it not worth hauling everything out.
yard sale and tag sale signs worked best for us, and super low prices, it all went and we had cash in hand at end of day.
even dishes cups silverware you name it somethings I put stickers on with 5cents on the price and poof all gone, some folsk made multiple trips back to keep filling their car, couple hundred bucks ten cents at a time goes fast when its by the car load.
i've had good and bad luck on Cl and want ads, but a Tag Sale sign or a flea market on a weekend in the fall? its going to be gone!

RE: Fulltime couples needing "separation time" - we only ones ..

XYZ we are 40 years in march, and we hear you, but found that too much 'alone time' can fast turn into separate lives and interests.
a bigger Rv was mentioned and for us that was the best thing ever, TV in bedroom and TV in living room with a couple doors, I can be in 'my' spot and read without hearing the Soaps I hate so much, and she can sew or read without being front row to a john wayne marathon....space but still in talking or at least yelling distance is what works best for us.

RE: Looking for TT recommendations

can't suggest anything in a 26 foot modelother than we had a prowler 250FQ and if it had a slide we might have hung onto it a bit longer, liked everything but the lack of room in the kitchen.
I am 6'5 barefoot and I can walk around our new wildwood 292FKDS with my hat on and low boots, HUGE shower I think, ...maybe have to look at the bigger TTs?? I'm thrilled we did, but the 250FQ was good to us!

RE: Any recomendation on trailer lenght

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a great SUV. We had one and loved it. But, it makes a poor tow vehicle because of its short wheel base.
The engine/transmission of the TV determines the ability to tow weight.
The wheel base of the TV determines its ability to tow length.
You've got a short WB TV, so stick to a short TT - under 25', IMO.
can't say it any better than already said, tail wagging the dog is the issue you need to think on most.
had a 26 foot prowler the Hemi Durango didnt know it was back there...til cross wind or semi went by , then hang the hell on and try to stay in your lane and that was with dual cam, without Dual Cam you hit 50mph you were out of control from sway.

RE: I-40 to SW UTAH in DECEMBER

550?? why would you go into Colorado, esp on 550 from Tulsa to Hurricane (st.george)! lord don't go that route esp in winter you'll wish you stayed home!
as said by Bat, 40 to 89, then you're call what you want from there...I have had some bad snow storms hit us on Alt 89 jacob lake area of the kaibab, so if it were me I'd go 89 to Kanab, fuel up eat, whathave you then south to fredonia on Alt 89 to whatever that highway is that goes right past Pipe Springs NM, where I would stop if you've never done it, then right into Hurricane on 59....I know the UT side is 59 but its 359? or something on the AZ side,

RE: Ca to NY Advice

I disasgree with the skip Wall Drug advice.
I can kill a day in there no problem but I like Country Stores (real ones AND fake touristy ones), so if you don't like those places then maybe skip it but 99% of Americans would think you are nuts based on the parking lots at these places.
I've done San Diego/ LA to NY and vice versa often, not sure what part of NY you are heading but JUNE would be my pick to be in South Dakota, lots of baby animals around, good weather to hike and walk, and not a ton of folks out yet.
I-15 to I-80 in Salt lake across 80 to I-25 north in Cheyenne to I-90 east was a normal route for us with a full load heading east, it is mild terrain and I-80 is the easiest crossing of the divide I can think of, plenty of gas and diesel stops and campgrounds along the way.
we'll do SD again this year doing Badlands NP, Custer State park, and Wall drug ( hitting the corn palace for more 100% Corn coffee mugs if they have them still, and Cabelas for a lunch and a wander down the dream aisle) and then into WY and back to UT.
Rushmore twice a lifetime is good for us, and crazy horse is worth seeing once a 100 years at most.
then it's I90 east to I-29 south to I-80 East, I will do about anything to avoid Minn and Wisc, and as much of I-90 as I can, hate the road, tolls every 2 miles...MILES??, hell you can be pulling out of one toll booth and just about SEE the next one!
bad roads, nothing to look at, lousy fuel stops to get in and out of, high winds, did I mention NOTHING to look at? I hated driving that route when I had to trucking I won't run it now that I'm retired unless it's hell or high water on I-80, then I-80/90 all the way East, not sure where in NY you are going but 90 cuts it in half with good enough north-South roads to connect off of.
I'd wait til First of June and go then, my 2 cents.

RE: Syracuse NY to Maine

we are in VT now heading back to Bar Harbor, its going to be early for you too see peak color on the way up but you'll see plenty back down.
biggest problem is always what is open that time of year, if you can boondock you'll have more options as most campgrounds are closed after today, some today at noon!
easiest route is I 90 over to I-95 into maine, slick, straight, flat and easy.
RT 9 across VT is under construction ...still...and not much color to warrant the route change...ditto RT 2 across MA but more will come!

RE: NY to Yellowstone

Badlands NP, Wall Drug, Custer State Park, Pigtail Bridges (cant think of road # but anyone there will tell oyu where the pigtail bridges are) that's all in SD
we stop every year in Yellowstone for 10 days and have never done anything twice and won't ever see it all...depends if you canoe, fish, hike or stay in the car.
tetons, ditto, a week a year for life and you'd never make a dent in it.
hit rushmore late enough to stay for lighting at night, why not? you're there already, see it lit at night.
crazy horse is an hour tops, custer Sp is a half day if you dont leave the car, wall drug is a hour or a day depending on the type people you are.
50 mph average in 10 hrs is a 500 mile a day ride and yes, there are some that think that is a rough day, we jsut drove from williamsburg, VA to Vermont and the folks with us made that a 2 day drive, to each their own, make it fun or you wont do it agian.

RE: Checking out places to retire in the West! Suggestions?

Wow. I appreciate all the responses, and we're going to investigate each one. We also plan on spending a great deal of time out west - particularly in all seasons (when we narrow the options down).
This summer I'm planning a long tour through the area - about 4000 miles, it appears. We don't mind cold and we don't mind snow. We started looking around Dubois Wyoming, except that the roads to the nearest hospitals would probably be closed in winter.
But we have time. There have been some excellent comments made, and any other thoughts are appreciated.
lived on antelope flat in dubios for years after Nam, even then togwotee pass was never closed for long enough to say so, I hauled thorugh there many times OTR and never had the pass closed in daylight.
jackson is one of the best hospitals in the USA, lots of burned out best in their field types 'chucked it' to move there and work.
wyoming has 13 kinds of sage brush, get tested to see if any are allergens to you, also rabbit brush in sept just about kills me, and pine pollen made it impossible for my wife to breathe there...i left because it got crowded with artsy types, ala flagstaff, and i hate winter. you must be very wealthy to think dubios so maybe think Wilson or Cora and check them out, were I too hit a mega jackpot lottery I'd go Cora part year.

RE: Cross Country from CT ??? - Advice Please

we do bar harbor, Maine to cima, CA and back a couple times a year so its more a matter of what the kids will enjoy then can it be done, if you limit it to 500 miles a day you'll have time to do stuff each day if you get up and out in a good fashion but eat up time...its a trade off.
we go like hell from east to west because for us there is nothing, nada, zip to see until you hit wyoming, or Utah, or CO/SD depending on your mood and the kids.
we've taken a number of kids back and forth and KOA campgrounds the first couple days are sure to have something for them to do when you pull in the first nights, from CT (Mystic) we've stopped South Bend KOA (IN) first day, getting the longest day out of the way.
Badlands NP , KOA in Interior , SD the second, ( which with road work and storms turned into the longest day on earth...too long for one kid so we stopped in Adel IA from then on with bad riders, I hate 90, so go 80 across then up 29 to 90 if going to SD from east)
then Badlands NP ( this can be arrive day 3), this includes wall drug, custer SP, rushmore at evening into night for lights, then crazy horse if time allows and they are interested..I'd do it once and that's enough for life( 4,5,6.7 day), short hop then to Devils tower and do tower and a hike( day8), then yellowstone/ teton( 9,10,11,12,13) and then down to Rocky mtn NP (14,15,16,17 if you hike much or fish) and from there its back east Adel, IA (day 18, not a first choice but a good stopping point, not good KOA by KOA standards, game room and thats it) perrysburg, OH, (day 19,again, good stopping point but not great park) then middle of NY( day 20) depending on weather and moods, then an easy day back into CT day 21.
done it many times and only get tired of driving from RMNP to...well...bar harbor, LOL.
if you have a 4th week then make shorter days out and back and hit local tourist things, parks, water parks, etc, they are there, we just dont do those.
edit: Or go down into Bryce, Capital Reef and then back through Moab and through to Rocky Mtn that way, we enjoy that area enough we bought land there and part time in caineville, but some kids only see 'rocks' and dont like to walk...thats a limiter

RE: You MIGHT be an RV'r if . . .

you are a RVer if you...
...have sold a second home because you don't want to be "tied to one spot"
...have sold the First home for the same reason! LOL
..told people you are selling your home and not had an answer when they ask you where you are moving to!
...or answered, " well, first we are stopping in..."
...ever been asked "where are you from?" and answered "When?"
if your dogs are more well traveled than most people.
if BLM and NF numbers are in speed dial
if you've ever stood with one hand on a faucet yelling "how's the pressure now?"
if you've ever made a pigtail while sitting in traffic
if you no longer need road maps to travel from anywhere to anywhere in the 48
if National Parks employees invite you to family get togethers...yearly!
if a 5 day trip is a 10 day trip because you keep saying, "we can't go through here without saying hello..."
